Cricket- More Of a Religion

In a country like our's, you can not like cricket, hate it even, or love it, you simply can't ignore it. You just cannot. Before this World Cup, even I didn't like cricket much. I hated it as a matter of fact. I only watched the Semi-finals and Finals, and that too because it was my country playing. I never thought cricket could be so interesting. I was literally hooked to the TV screen at the time of both the matches. I screamed my lungs out and went on the roads when India won. Every Indian did. :DBut coming to the point, I feel only cricket is given importance and no other sport. It's like Cricket is religion and all other sports, well just sports. Every single Indian- from the most high profile people to the people living in slums, all of them watch cricket, they know the players. And out national game, hockey? Do they even know who the caption of the Indian Hockey team is? I don't think so. I personally feel that cricket is given a lot of importance while the other sports are neglected. When the Hockey World Cup was going on, did anyone even bother to switch on their TV's and watch India play while when the ICC was on, everyone was glued to their TV screens, even people had taken half day off's from their offices. It's not like I'm against cricket or something, but I just think it's given undue importance. People have become SO obsessed with cricket that their moods and health also depend on the game. I recently read an article which said that there have been people who had heart attacks and died because their country lost a match, and some people committed suicide because of the same reason. It's okay to like a game and follow the matches, but I don't think too much of obsession is right. I mean should we let a game control our health and our moods? No, right? I want the people to recognize other sports as well and acknowledge the players who excel in them as well. and please, I do not say stop following cricket or anything, just give the other sports the importance they deserve.
